U.S. senators speak out on Robert C. Byrd
Advertiser

Senate Majority Leader  Tom Daschle, D-S.D.

"It's no accident that Senator Byrd carries the Constitution in his breast pocket, because its words and its lessons are always close to his heart. He is not only the keeper of the Senate's history, he has used the power of the Senate to make a better future for the people of West Virginia and America.

"Senator Byrd has described the Senate as the 'anchor of the Republic.' After the leadership he has shown this past year, you could use those very same words to describe him."

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

"I am sure it is his greatest honor to be recognized by the state that he loves. Those of us from many other states view him as a national treasure. His role in the Senate is historic and unique. I don't know that he has any peer when it comes to his loyalty to the Constitution and his devotion to the United States Senate.

"I have been in meetings that, if it were not for Robert Byrd's presence, many senators would not have thought about mounting a battle. With him on your side, you felt you could take on the Senate and the world."

Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, D-Md.

"I know of no member of the United States Congress who has a deeper, more enduring dedication to the Constitution of the United States than does Senator Byrd.

"I cannot express sufficient thanks to him for his eloquent efforts during his congressional career to defend and preserve the Constitution, the basic fundamental document of our republic.

"The civility, intelligence and commitment that Senator Byrd brings to the Senate have earned him the respect and admiration of every one of its members."
