CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Organizers of the annual Kanawha County Fair plan to get down and dirty next weekend with expanded mud races and other muddy events.
The fair, which runs Sept. 9-12 at Camp Virgil Tate, includes truck and tractor pulls and ATV races in addition to mud races that were added at last year's event.
Following the officially sanctioned mud race on Sept. 11, fair organizers also are opening the event up to the general public.
"We're hoping to get local people to come and participate in mud events this year," said fair director Ron Gregory.
The fair -- which runs from 4 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 9 and 10, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 11 and noon to 4 p.m. on Sept. 12 -- features mud events, live entertainment, carnival rides, history exhibits, food contests and fireworks. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children.
The fair includes ATV races at 6 p.m. Sept. 9, a truck and tractor pull at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 and mud races at 11 a.m. Sept. 11. Following the race, members of the public are invited to wallow on the track, Gregory said, a pastime that has proven popular at other mud events around the country.
Live entertainment includes an "American Idol"-style talent contest at 7 p.m. Sept. 9, country performer Andy Griggs at 7 p.m. Sept. 10, Shenandoah at 8 p.m. Sept. 11 and the Gospel Harmony Boys at 1 p.m. Sept. 12. Contemporary Christian singer Tommy Griffith also will perform, at 4 p.m. Sept. 12.
Carnival rides are free with admission, Gregory said. He said it is the fourth year the county fair has been held at Camp Virgil Tate since county officials revived the event in 2007.
"We expect to have a bigger and better fair for 2010," Gregory said.
