Annual Kanawha River cleanup set for Saturday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The state Department of Environmental Protection is preparing for an annual cleanup along the Kanawha River.

The 21st annual Great Kanawha River Cleanup is set for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Sites include the beach at Winfield Locks, Roadside Park in St. Albans, Magic Island in Charleston and Gauley Bridge.

Bags and gloves will be provided to volunteers. The DEP said Tuesday that volunteers should register with the agency to ensure each cleanup site has adequate supplies. To register, contact Travis Cooper at Travis.L.Coo...@wv.gov or 800-322-5530.

The DEP says more than 6 tons of trash and 70 tires were collected last year.
