State GOP chairman to step down

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia GOP Chairman Mike Stuart announced plans to resign Thursday night.

Stuart's departure follows weeks of criticism from some GOP leaders who scolded the Republican state chairman for planning a petition drive to recall table games at the Mardi Gras Casino & Resort in Nitro.

Stuart said the table games flap had nothing to do with his decision to step down. His last day will be May 9, the day after the primary election.

As a West Virginia Republican I liked Mike Stuart, but he was definitely pushing the wrong message at the wrong time.

Killing the messenger does not alter the validity of the message. It doesn't change the act that the Mardi Gras Casino was a shady end run around WV taxpayers, by an organized group of promoters and insiders who did very well for themselves as a result. Through constructive gerrymandering, voters who resided in close proximity were denied the right to voice their opinions on the matter. The fix was in on this one. Every significant voting block was courted. Seniors, labor unions etc. were left holding the bag of empty promises. So what's next? Can we expect the owners to threaten to close the facility and eliminate those 850 jobs if smoking is not permitted at the casino? Watch and see. This isn't a morality issue. As always, it's a money issue. Those who provided the manpower and grunt work to shove this thing through were duped and short changed. And all those directly affected were not afforded the opportunity to vote. We wuz robbed.

So, Stuart wants to "fight for the citizens of WV" by doing away with 850 jobs?
