Evans leads Jonathan Clark and John Duty by two shots each and Craig Berner by five. (See results, Page 2B.) The second round of the 54-hole event shifts to Edgewood CC at 1 p.m. today, and Wednesday's final round moves to Sleepy Hollow GC, again starting at 1 p.m.
The club pros competing in the tournament will contribute their winnings to the following charities - Evans (Children's Miracle Network), Clark (West Virginia Special Olympics) and Berner (American Cancer Society).

STATE SWEEPS: Bo Darby went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs as host West Virginia State crushed Salem International 14-0 Monday to complete a West Virginia Conference baseball doubleheader sweep.
Darby and Joey Jobst each homered for the Yellow Jackets (32-11). Jobst and Erick Workman contributed two hits apiece to help make a winner out of starter J.D. Broderick (2-2).
In the opening game, Workman and Darby each drove in two runs during a six-run sixth inning to help State escape with a 6-2 victory. Salem broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the sixth. Jake Kight (2-2) picked up the win with three innings of relief.
State takes on Shepherd at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the opening round of the WVC tournament in Johnstown, Pa.

WVC HONORS: Eric Workman of West Virginia State and Matt Hanley of Pitt Johnstown shared the WVC baseball player of the week hitting honors. Workman garnered 14 hits in 27 at-bats, knocked in 13 runs, with seven of the junior outfielder's hits going for extra bases as he racked up four homers, a pair of triples and a double.
Travis McGrath of West Virginia State received the pitcher of the week award, as the senior from Hurricane only allowed one run and two hits, while fanning 10 hitters in nine innings.
The softball player of the week awards went to Sarah Zeleznikar of Fairmont State (hitter) and Alyssa Childers of Fairmont State (pitcher).
Concord remains the top squad in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Division II North Atlantic Region top 10. The Mountain Lions (35-11) established a new school record for single-season wins.

nnNOZICA MILESTONE: University of Charleston baseball coach Tom Nozica reached his 600th career win at Triana Field last Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep over California (Pa.).
Nozica has been coaching at UC (and its predecessor, Morris Harvey) since 1970, and is among only 44 Division II coaches nationwide to reach the 600-win milestone. The Golden Eagles complete their season today at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Fairmont State.
nnWVU BASEBALL: West Virginia's game against Maryland, originally scheduled for 4 p.m. today, has been postponed by heavy rain. The Mountaineers travel to St. John's for a three-game series starting Friday.
Pitcher Matt Yurish has been named WVU's athlete of the week. The senior from Martinsburg collected two wins working a total of 13 innings, allowing just four runs, three earned, and walking three while striking out 13. He recorded a 2.03 ERA on the week and improved his record to 5-1.nnMU BASEBALL: Victor Gomez was named C-USA hitter of the week after his performance, his first, after going 11-for-21 with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. The freshman designated hitter has a .370 overall batting average and 30 RBIs.
nnMU HONOREE: Marshall's Brad Helton has been named the C-USA video coordinator of the year.
This marks the seventh time that Helton has been selected as a conference video coordinator of the year, having won the MAC Award six consecutive times (1999-2005).
nnWVSU CAMP: The West Virginia State University Athletic Department will be sponsoring a softball strength and conditioning camp from June 2-6 on campus in Institute. Cost is $100.

nnMU VOLLEYBALL: Jessica Dhoore of LaPorte, Ind., has signed to play for Marshall next fall. The 5-foot-4 senior was named to the Junior Olympics All-Tournament Team at the 2007 nationals.
