Rutgers, USF deserving of 6-6 records
Advertiser

IN THE interest of full disclosure, I must confess to a rooting interest this fall in college football.

I am rooting for South Florida. I am rooting for Rutgers.

Easy, there, you gold 'n' blues. I know how easy it is to get under your skin, but this is not what you think.

I am rooting for the Bulls and Scarlet Knights to win six games. Exactly six games. No more, no less.

And it doesn't really matter which six, either. I'm going to assume Rutgers can polish off Howard and Texas Southern, and then it can win four others.

Similarly, I assume USF can muster the will to defeat Wofford and Charleston Southern. Win just four others, please.

So did you notice the same thing I did about those two teams? Yep, they both playing two members of the Football Cheesecake Subdivision. And so will Kansas State, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Mississippi.

(One figures that will not be prominently touted in their season-ticket brochures.)

I could try to root all seven teams on to a 6-6 season, but that would tax my increasingly finite focus. So I'll choose the Big East teams for my special devotion.

So why am I wanting these folks to go 6-6? Well, under the NCAA's definition of a "deserving winning team," (hey, it's in the Division I Manual, you can look 'er up) teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (ugh) must win six games out of 12 to qualify for a bowl.

But you can only count one game against an FCS team. And if you're "stuck" with playing two FCS teams, it doesn't matter. You count only one.

Therefore, USF and Rutgers could very well go 6-6 and not qualify for, say, the PapaJohns.com Bowl in beautiful Birmingham. Worse, as far as the coaching staffs are concerned, the teams wouldn't get those precious extra practices.

Considering the scheduling tactics of both teams, I would laugh heartily for the next six months.

Once upon a time, in a newspaper far, far way, I used to advocate the banning of Rutgers from American television. Can't do that too much now, as the Scarlet Knights are respectable under Greg Schiano.

SEC FB teams (maybe 1 game each every 10 years)play anywhere or anyone outside of "their" area/weak conference. Check the sec's out of conference foes, go ahead! Add in Ark. So.Carolina, Miss state, Ol Miss, Vandy...and now Tenn...PLEASE. Plus their OUT OF CONFERENCE schedule....like the big 10's... SOFT...compare WVU OOC schedule to ANY sec/big10 teams...go ahead--do it, see what you already know. You guys should let Troy,Furman,Florida International Lou.Tech-Lou.Lafeyette,N.Texas and Charleston Southern into the sec. You guys play them enough.(But not enough for the MIGHTY sec). Only Geo and LSU travel any distance to play a game(this year)....7-8 home games each year for almost all sec teams...Chattanooooga? N.Arizona? Kentucky has a better schedule than 8! sec teams. Have a Goodn Boys

In 1953, the ACC was formend and WVU was assured it would be the next team to join. 1971 came, South Carolina left the ACC and WVU was told it would be given admission shortly thereafter. 1978 came, the ACC took Georgia Tech over WVU, and informed WVU that it was next. 1991 came, the ACC took Florida State, the SEC took SC and Arkansas, and WVU had been left out again. Where you are getting this story that WVU was joining the SEC is beyond me. Why would the SEC take a team that wants nothing to do with the south over a team that is clearly southern and is within the recuiting base of SEC schools? WVU has never had anything to offer the SEC and would never be considered to join it.

No one said academic superiority genius. Last time I checked WVU recruits just fine lately. Also like I said WVU was all but in the SEC when South Carolina pulled a power play and it had nothing to do with recruiting. The ACC has never promised WVU anything since the 50's.

The ACC has been promising WVU a spot since the 50's, but alas, WVU has no natural allies in high places. They are not southern, nor are they atlantic. Western Virginia has no friends and they have earned it. Maybe the south is good because of its long growing season, or fine eating. South Carolina is in the SEC because it has a large in-state recruiting base, which it competes Clemson for. Western Virginia University relies on leftovers from PA, NY, NJ, VA, and OH to muster enough of a team to act competitive. Sure White and Slaton were nice to watch, but SEC schools all have White's and Slaton's in some form or fashion. As I said previously, WVU would reign supreme in C-USA, where their blue chip rejects could compete against the blue chip rejects at Marshall, ECU, UCF, Houston, Rice, Memphis, etc. As for WVU's alleged academic superiority, I would enjoy seeing any class schedule from any major college football player.
