Mary Ann Bennett, 43, of Richwood went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born June 23, 1965, in Richwood and was a daughter of the late Haymond Holcomb Sr. and Virginia Holcomb Chapman. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Ezekiel Matthew Ray Holcomb; sister, Sandra Lee Holcomb; and brother, Andrew James Holcomb.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She attended Macedonia United Methodist Church, Fenwick Mountain. She loved nature, feeding the squirrels and birds and her dog. She loved cooking, gardening, and sewing. She donated to World Wide Ministries and the Crystal Cathedral with Robert Schular.

She will be sorely missed.

Survivors include four sons, Robby Ray Holcomb and fiancée, Melanie Jean Evans, of Richwood and Daniel Erickson Bennett, Travis Matthew Bennett and Thomas Justin Bennett, all of Fenwick Mountain; seven brothers, Bill Holcomb and wife, Clarice, and Johnny Holcomb and wife, Rose, all of Fenwick Mountain, Steve Holcomb and wife, Cindy, and Haymond Holcomb, all of Richwood, Tommy Holcomb of Fenwick Mountain, Robert Holcomb and wife, Margaret, of Lexington, N.C., and Tim Holcomb of Richwood; sister, Suzette and husband, John Williams, of Fenwick Mountain; one granddaughter, Autumn Star Holcomb; and one stepgranddaughter, Trinity Devine Evans.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with the Rev. Charles Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Richwood.

Larnie Boddy Jr., 60, of Dunbar went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in CAMC General Hospital.

He was born on Nov. 13, 1947, and was preceded in death by his mother, Inez Boddy, and sister, Gloria Woods.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston.

He leaves to mourn his death: his wife of 40 years, Bernice; children, Timothy (Toni) and Diarra Jermain (Jessica) Corey; father, Larnie Boddy Sr.; brothers and sisters, Cheryl Shelton of Dunbar, Charles (Kim) of North Wales, Pa., Edward of Detroit, Mich., Vanessa of Raleigh, N.C., Tina (Chuck) of Houston, Texas, Carol Boddy of Houston, Texas, and Paul David (Marsha) of Charleston; and grandchildren, Timothy “T.C.”, Malik, Collie and Michah.

He always said it was his responsibility to teach his grandchildren. He did that until his death.

He also leaves aunts, uncles, niece, nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be noon Wednesday, July 9, at the First Baptist Church of Charleston.

Elizabeth Carruthers Bruce, 78, died June 27, 2008, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Baldwin Bruce, Margaret Lynn Lewis Bruce and husband, Maxwell Fletcher, and William Cameron Bruce and his wife, Carmen; her grandchildren, William Iain and Thomas Grandin Bruce; and, her sister, Carol Carruthers Sims.

She graduated from St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville, Va., and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. A longtime resident of Virginia Beach, Mrs. Bruce devoted her life to her family and the community. As a volunteer, Mrs. Bruce served as president of the Junior Virginia Beach Garden Club and the Virginia Beach Garden Club; president of the Norfolk Society of Arts; chairman of the Chrysler Museum of Art gift shop and head docent; chairman of the Friends of Historic Houses of the Chrysler Museum; chairman of the Galilee Episcopal Church gift shop and an active member of the church's alter guild. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and, most recently, Mrs. Bruce served as a docent for the Princess Anne Judicial Court System.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Galilee Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, Virginia, followed by a graveside burial at The University of Virginia Cemetery at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Lucy Elaine Casto, 59, of Hurricane passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, after a short illness.

Elaine was a homemaker and was employed by the A to Z Supermarket in Hurricane as a manger for 10 years. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her father, Simon Wallace.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Donald Casto at home; son, Daniel Casto of Waynesboro, Va.; mother, Audrey Carawan, and sister, Lisa Horlacker, of Bolivar, Mo.; brother, Jonathan S. Wallace of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, 2002 20th St., Nitro, with the Rev. Harold B. White Jr. officiating.

Mary Esther Couch

 

Mary Esther Couch, 82, of Charlottesville, Va., passed away on July 4, 2008.

Born on February 16, 1926, in Charleston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Lester and Catherine Byus McBride. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Cullen McBride; two sisters, Elizabeth McBride Cook and Doris McBride Dressler; and a grandson, James G. Couch III.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James Grant Couch of Charlottesville; two sons, William Cullen Couch and his wife, Susan, of Wolftown, Va., and James Grant Couch Jr. and his wife, Louise, of Boulder, Colo.; her sister, Margaret Lynn Eversole of Charleston, W.Va.; her brother, John Andrew McBride of Cocoa, Fla.; and by three grandchildren, Hilary Couch Scardino of Santa Cruz, Calif., Corey Couch Sethi of Fairfax, Va., and Rachel Catherine Couch of Wolftown, Va.

A member of the Junior League in Larchmont, N.Y., she assisted with various assignments working with disadvantaged youths and halfway houses. While living in Pasadena, Calif., she was a docent at the Huntington Museum and Library during which she participated in conservation efforts after a major fire and had the opportunity to work with the conservation team from the Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum.

Later, she enjoyed creating her own works of art and was an avid painter in oils, contributing numerous portraits and still-life to friends while living in Charlottesville. Years ago she was also an accomplished classical guitarist who loved to “play and sing.”

Another one of her great loves was travel, which she did often with her husband Jim on trips around the world.

A memorial funeral service to celebrate Esther's life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, Va., with the Rev. Miller Hunter officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Dean Aldrich Dolin, 73, of Clendenin, formerly of Sharples, died July 3, 2008, in CAMC Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

He was born June 29, 1935, and was a son of the late Dewey and Iona Ferrell Dolin. He was also preceded in death by one son, David Junior Dolin.

He is survived by one son, Michael Ervin of Elyria, Ohio; three daughters, Jennifer Bryant of Lorain, Ohio, Virginia Gilliam of Columbus, Ohio, and Deanna Dolin of Lorain, Ohio; one brother, Larry of Lorain, Ohio; two sisters, Karen Taylor of Clendenin and Connie Ferrell of Sugar Creek, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Stevens Funeral Home with Earl Akers officiating. Interment will follow in Ferrell Cemetery, Hewett.

Emma Lucille Gillespie, 94, of Procious entered into rest Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ivydale.

Born on March 27, 1914, in Duck, she was the daughter of the late William and Belle Nottingham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Roland Gillespie; son, Michael Gillespie; brothers, Ray and Herbert Nottingham; and sister, Sarah Coon.

She was a retired teacher, having taught for 37 years in Clay County. She was a graduate of Glenville State College and a member of the West Virginia Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sue Gillespie of Procious; sister, Jean Eakle of Washington, D.C.; and grandchildren, Melissa Cullipher, Brian Gillespie and Matt Gillespie.

Robert Anthony “Tony” Grant, 52, of Charleston died on June 26, 2008, in Montgomery, Ala., after a long illness.

He was a graduate of Charleston High School and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Tony was a retired from Union Carbide after 12 years of service as an emergency medical technician. He was appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council by Gov. Bob Wise.

He is survived by his mother, Katie Grant, and his father, John Grant, of Charleston; daughter, Emerald Grant of Washington, D.C.; adopted daughter, Angelia Gomez of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Eugenia “Vikki” Rudolph of Montgomery, Ala., and Annie Grace McBryde-Ervin of Charleston; two nieces and five nephews; two great-nieces and three great-nephews; best friends, Larry Moore and Jimmy Smith of Charleston; and a host of other relatives and friends.

H. Wayne Harkless, 50, of Racine, formerly of Sylvester, died July 2, 2008, at home after a long illness.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm and Ruth Harkless, and a sister, Lavonna Harkless of Sylvester.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela; two sons, E.T. “Little Wayne” Harkless of Racine and Preston Harkless of Bloomingrose; two grandsons; one sister, Doris Harkless of Bloomingrose; and one brother, Malcolm Harkless Jr. of Racine.

By Wayne's wishes, the body has been cremated.

Wayne will be sadly missed by his family and a host of friends.

Betty Jo Holstein, 77, of Charleston died Friday, July 4, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 10, 1930, in Marmet and was a daughter of the late Roy Jennings and Marie Lee Porter Morris. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Philip Delano Morris; sister, Vada Lee Morris Begley; and nephew, Monty Edward Begley.

Surviving are her husband, Stanford L. “Kack” Holstein of Charleston; a son, Mark Morris Holstein and his wife, Vicki Cielensky-Holstein, of Hurricane; and three loving grandsons, Jason C. Holstein, Justen C. Holstein and Jordan C. Holstein.

She is also survived by two nieces, Angela Marie Begley Farmer of Mobile, Ala., and Marcia Ann Morris Campbell of Charleston.

Betty worked for Bell Lines Inc. Trucking International, Cross Lanes, retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Kanawha City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with the Rev. Roger Woods officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park.

Norma B. Hughes, 76, of Hurricane died Thursday, July 3, 2008, after an extended illness.

Born August 27, 1931, in Dunbar, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Claphus and Nona Lilly Buckalew.

Survivors include her husband, Michael C. Hughes; son, Troy D. Sutler III and his wife, Kim, of Bridgewater, Mass; grandson, Donald E. Starbard III of Humboldt, Tenn.; great-grandson, Donald E. Starbard IV; brother, Arthur R. Buckalew of Dunbar; sister, Drema Smithers of Christiansburg, Va.; and sister-in-law, Katherine Dennison of St. Albans.

Her daughter, Renee' Lynn Sutler, preceded her in death.

She graduated from McMillan Hospital School of Nursing, West Virginia State College and West Virginia University. She was a retired nurse and enjoyed many years in her chosen profession.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, at Chapman Funeral Home, 3941 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane. Burial will follow in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Bobby Vincent Lanham, 71, of Charleston passed away July 4, 2008, in CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Bobby was a farmer in Buffalo and former owner of Cross Lanes Residential Board and Care Home. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, a life member of the NRA and a Methodist.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, I.C. and Faye Rhodes Lanham.

He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews.

Ike Light Jr. went to be with the Lord Sunday June 29, 2008, after a short illness.

Ike was preceded in death by his sons, Michael Scott and Timothy.

Hazel was a graduate of Berea College, Berea, Ky., and was a retired chemist for Union Carbide. She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Charleston. She enjoyed nature and was an active member of the Kanawha Trail Club of Charleston for several years.

Surviving are her loving husband of 60 years, Gaylord Martin; daughters, Rose Mary Cline and Rosalee Casto, both of Kentuck; sons, Jerry Robert Martin of Friday, Texas, and Philip Ray Martin of Augusta, Ga.; sisters, Silvia Hendricks of Las Vegas, Nev., Peggy Blevins of Austin, Texas, and Wilma Allred of Cookeville, Tenn.; brother, Howard Sewell of Clarkrange, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was a nurse's aide and retired from Ward's Nursing Home, Huntington.

Goldie is survived by her son, Homer Morris of New Jersey.

Tommy J. Murdock

 

Tommy J. Murdock, 83, of Charleston passed away at home on Friday, July 4, 2008.

He was retired West Virginia park superintendent. He was a lifelong resident of Charleston and was of the Roman Catholic faith. Tommy was a veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy, and was at the battle of Iwo Jima.

Additionally, he was a member of Beni Kedem Shrine KCCH and was an amateur radio operator.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Stella, and one granddaughter, Lisa Betts.

He is survived by his daughter, Vicki Meadows of Charleston; grandchildren, Kelsey Miller, Brandi Betts, Casey Murdock, Chris Murdock and Jason Murdock; and adopted granddaughter, Amy Shaffer, and her children, Andrew and Autumn.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beni Kedem Shrine Center, Shriners for Children, 100 Quarrier St., Charleston, WV 25301.

Nannie Reece

 

Nannie Reece, 100, went to be with the Lord on July 5, 2008.

As a young woman, Nannie learned to drive a Model T Ford and taught eight grades in a one-room school in Kanawha County. Married to Arnold Reece and the mother of three, she became a widow at the age of 61, retired at 65, and then worked two part-time jobs at Mountain State Press and Tiny Tyke Day Care until the age of 87. She taught Sunday school, played the piano, and was active in the Women's Circle at Kanawha City Baptist Church.

Nannie is survived by her children; James Reece and wife, Kathy, of Elyria, Ohio, Tom Reece and wife, Doris, of Kenna, and Margie Reece Legg and husband, Ray, of Dayton, Tenn. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sandy Reece McMillion and husband, Gary, of Nitro, Gary Reece and wife, Rita, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Beth Reece Desrosiers and husband, Steve, of Tavares, Fla., Kelley Reece Harper and husband, Brian, of Kenna, and Joshua Legg and wife, Hannah, of Chattanooga, Tenn. In addition, Nannie is survived by eight great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston. Burial will be in Boyd Burdette Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Phyllis Runnion

 

Phyllis Runnion, 71, of Falling Rock passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008, following a long illness.

She was a 1954 graduate of Clendenin High School, was formerly employed by Clendenin Lumber and was a member of Mud Fork Church and the Sweet Adelines.

She was the daughter of the late James Edgell and Bessie Lee Hoffman and was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lee Runnion.

Mrs. Runnion is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Cathy and Ronald Kushner and Sandra and Leslie Vance, all of Falling Rock; brother, Ronald Hoffman of Fayetteville; and one grandchild, William Vance.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with Pastor Chris Stout officiating. Interment will be in Koontz Cemetery, Clendenin.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Donald Ray Sadler

 

Donald Ray Sadler, 67, of Hurricane passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington.

Don was the co-owner and operator of the Hi-way Inn, Hurricane. He served his country with the United States Army, was a Catholic by faith and a huge fan and supporter of West Virginia University. Don will be remembered for his kind and generous nature. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his best friend and partner, Patrick Powell; and friend and caregiver, Kimberley Bishop and her children, Johnna and Codi Spotswood. Don is also survived by family, Danny and Betty Wallace, Sherry Griffiths, Tom Griffiths, Joey and Sharon Perry, Randy and Glenda Cecil, Skipper and Kim Perry and James and Gloria Rook, as well as other family members and many friends.

Friends are invited to a service in celebration of Don's life at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Chapman Funeral Home, 3941 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane. At his request, Don donated his body to the West Virginia University Human Gift Registry.

Following the service a reception will be held at the Hi-Way Inn, Hurricane. Everyone is welcome.

Goldie Myrtle Procious Samples, 100, of Procious died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House.

Mrs. Samples was a homemaker and a member of Horners Fork Baptist Church.

She was the daughter of the late Addie and William Procious and was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Samples; son, John Rogers; brother, Leonard Procious; sisters, Stella Thomas, Beulah Carper and Dahl Hart; stepdaughter, Helen Markle; and stepsons, Glen and Gail Samples.

She is survived by her son, Lonnie Samples Jr. and his wife, Cathy, of Procious; daughter, Lola Jean Smith of Procious; stepchildren, Kester Samples of Ohio, Lester Samples of Pinch, Robert Samples of Charleston and Faye Grose of Procious; 34 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, in Samples Cemetery, Procious, with Pastor Basil Hershberger officiating.

The family extends thanks to caregivers, Mary, Emogene, Nancy and Gloria, and Hubbard Hospice House and a very special thank you goes to Barbara Richards.

Ruby V. Short, 94, of St. Albans passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Short.

Ruby is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Christi and Wayne Binion of St. Albans; sister, Louise Richards of Bluefield; nieces, Harlene Flanagan of Maryland and Shirley Daniels and her husband, Harry, of Kanawha City; nephew, John David Stallard of Tennessee; and grandchildren, Jared Binion, Jenna Gardner and her husband, Chris, and Jeremy Binion and his wife, Kari. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Kylie, Cole, Laynie and Nolan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans. Burial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Bluewell. Burial will follow.
